Antonio and others,
This is identical to the reply which I received. The links available on the=
3 pages listed are limited and I wonder how much more will become availabl=
e in January.

Dear Mr Scutiero
Thank you for your email of 12 December concerning the patent, trademark, a=
nd designs pages on the British Library website.
You are of course correct in pointing out that much of the intellectual pro=
perty content was removed when the collections and services sections of the=
website were reworked as the new 'Help for researchers' area of the site, =
which went live in October.
Although the established patent, trade mark, and designs pages were extreme=
ly extensive, much of the material had not been subject to wholesale review=
since it was added to the website some years ago. A gradual accumulation o=
f additional text and links meant that the content had grown well beyond th=
e scope originally envisaged by the intellectual property team and had beco=
me almost impossible to maintain.
The intellectual property team therefore took the opportunity provided by t=
he development of 'Help for researchers' to carry out a root and branch rev=
iew of the pages for which they were responsible. Collections pages were in=
place for the launch of the site, and I hope that you will be pleased to s=
ee that some of the links pages have been restored at http://www.bl.uk/resh=
elp/findhelpsubject/socsci/intprop/tradmk/iptmdatabses/databases.html <bloc=
ked::http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelpsubject/socsci/intprop/tradmk/iptmdat=
abses/databases.html> , http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelpsubject/socsci/int=
prop/ipdes/ipdesdata/databases.html <blocked::http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/find=

/databases.html <http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelpsubject/socsci/intprop/ip=
patents/ippatdata/databases.html> . More will be added in the near future.=
We expect the revised patents links page to go online in January 2009.
In revising the patent, trademark, and designs material, the intellectual p=
roperty team are concentrating on creating content that is focused on the L=
ibrary's collections, highlights the most important resources elsewhere, an=
d can be can be kept fully up to date. The new pages are more selective tha=
n the previous set, and will be much easier to use. We will explore communi=
ty-based approaches for developing and maintaining more exhaustive sets of =
links.
We apologise for any inconvenience caused by the sudden unavailability of t=
he material you clearly value a great deal. We will ensure that we communic=
ate future changes of this kind more effectively. In the meantime we hope t=
hat you find the new intellectual property content helpful in the months an=
d years to come.
Yours sincerely.

Thank you very much Steve for having shown up this removal of the patent li=

rt the reinstatement of the collection and its updating, if possible, and I=
agree to the suggestion to write to the British Library (even as a non Bri=

Dear colleagues,
I have recently discovered to my horror that the many years of work which =
Steve van Dulken has devoted to setting up a high quality link collection f=
or patents information has been scrapped. The redesign of the British Libr=
ary website has removed his listings of searchable patent databases, and th=
e directory of patent offices. Whilst other sources contain some of this i=
nformation, none adds the helpful text notes which Steve has contributed, w=
ith hints and tips on searching and comments on pricing policy.
The disappearance is attributed to a change in BL policy, which limits the=
amount of work which BL staff can do to provide information "which is also=
available elsewhere". I feel strongly that this was (is?) a unique collec=
tion of genuine value-added data. Ironically, whilst patent information sp=
ecialists might be able to obtain portions of it from elsewhere, it was per=
haps most valuable to less experienced users, who are supposed to be the fo=
cus of the BL's promotion of IP information.
I would appeal to you, if you value this collection, to make your views kn=
own to the BL management. Write to the Chief Executive (Dame Lynne Brindle=
y) at The British Library, St Pancras, 96 Euston Road, London, NW1 2DB or e=
-mail to patents-information_at_bl.uk to register your protest and support for=
the reinstatement of this material on the website. If the PIUG Board and/=
or PATMG and other user groups would like to consider a corporate response,=
I'm sure that would be welcome, too.
