Dear PIUG Members,

The New Year is here and as we go into it the Board of PIUG wishes each
and every one of you a happy, healthy, and successful one. I would like
to serve as a conduit to collect news from members such as job
promotions or changes or any other information that you would like to
share with the membership.

Sometimes the news may be bad, and it is with great sadness that I must
announce the passing of Joseph L. Ebersole, Esq. "Joe", we at PIUG
affectionately referred to him, passed on October 18, 2007 in
Washington, D.C. Joe was a dear friend and supporter of PIUG for many
years. He participated in the PIUG annual conference many times over
the years as the keynote speaker, and also spoke in various sessions
that required his expertise on complex issues at the USPTO. He was a
vibrant, interesting, and highly knowledgeable presenter of the facts
and issues that we needed to hear about. Moreover, he was a kind,
generous and approachable spirit who was willing to help whenever called
upon.

Joe was well known and respected in the information industry. He was
President of the Coalition for Patent Information Dissemination where he
served as a bridge to discuss and provide insights into the USPTO
activities such as the 21st Century Strategic Plan, which outlines how
the USPTO will achieve goals related to timeliness, e-Government, and
competitive sourcing while focusing on quality and productivity. Joe
also discussed the Trilateral projects aimed at a single approach to
filing and examination of all major patent offices including accelerated
examination. As a group PIUG has learned so much and grown from his
many contributions.

His interests were varied and broad. Joe was involved in the projects
and activities of commercial vendors such as LexisNexis, Reed Elsevier,
and Dialog. Also, as a member of the D.C. Computer Law Forum, Joe
presented a paper on The Google Print Library Project in 2005.

Joe's memorial service and reception were moving and many from the
patent information community attended. During the memorial service,
several speakers remembered Joe for his modesty, intelligence and
intensity. The memorial service program noted that remembrances of Joe
may be shared online at http://josephlebersole.blogspot.com
<http://josephlebersole.blogspot.com/>. The family would very much
appreciate hearing from PIUG members.

We look forward to continuing in carrying on Joe's work.
