Unfortunately, There are more possibilities than this.

As Elliott correctly states, the letter S stands for Showa, the regnal
name of Emperor Hirohito.

However, the document could be a published patent application (A
document), an examined application (B or B2 document), a published
utility model (U document) or an examined utility model (Y2 document).

To distinguish the documents, proceed as follows:

Go to the Japanese Patent Office Patent and Utility Model Gazette
database at:
http://www4.ipdl.inpit.go.jp/Tokujitu/tjsogodben.ipdl?N0000=115

In the Kind Code box type A or B or U or Y as appropriate.

In the number box type S62-1779

Click on <Search>

On the next screen, a list of documents will appear as hyperlinks in the
left hand column. Click on one to view an abstract for an A document or
the Japanese text for other documents. Click on the <Japanese> box to
view the full text for an A document.

The IPC on the front page will be a useful clue to see if you have the
right document. If not, try a different kind code.
