Hi Cathy,
Here is a translation table for the years for the Hon and Shu calender years.
For example, a Japanese Application listed as year 1981 number 034593,
can usually be acquired as JP56034593 or JPS56034593. 
Same for the Hon years.  
Of course, how you enter it "exactly" also depends on where you are trying to get it. 
This works for the "oddballs" at the EPO on occasion.

Imperial year (Hon or H) followed by Western year
