How would you characterize the current patenting climate internationally?
The U.S. appears to be trending antipatent. The PTO is becoming stricter wi=
th some art fields granting only 20% of applications, according to rumor. A=
t international patent information fora, the USPTO tends to be either absen=
t or sit in the audience like a bump on a log.
China, Korean and Japan are trending propatent. While still behind in enfor=
cement, China appears to be improving on all fronts. Korea is enthusiastica=
lly propatent. In Japan, while the IP court is showing that current patents=
are disappointingly weak, the government is stepping up programs to promot=
e better quality applications.
While there is a strongly antipatent faction in Europe, the EPO is fully en=
gaged on all fronts, suggesting a net propatent climate in Europe.
