Hello Everyone,

I had the good fortune to attend this event and I would like to
encourage everyone to take a look at the site and watch some of the
presentations. You will see many familiar names on the list as some
of the most noted patent searchers in Europe gave presentations during
the meeting. As always Stephen Adams did a wonderful job of summing
up the time the group spent together and if you only watch one
presentation I would suggest you look at this one (http://www.ir-facility.org/symposium/irf-symposium-2008/videos-and-presentations/wrap-up-sessions-part-2-stephen-adams
).

Participating in activities such as this are critically important for
PIUG as a whole and for individual PIUG members in particular. Our
profession is still using methods and techniques that were dated 30
years ago and this group represents an earnest attempt to bring modern
(or semi-modern) information retrieval tools to the patent searching
world. The results of this effort will likely have a long lasting
effect on patent searchers and how they do their jobs in the future.

This effort also needs our help. If it is to be done right it needs
input from the users of this information. People who understand the
nuances of patent information are the people who should be in the
middle of the work that is being done. The IRF is actively looking
for patent searchers to help ensure that the results are up to our
standards and provide value to our profession.

Sherri has done a great job brining news of these activities to the
PIUG community and Stephen and I are active participants (along with
many European searchers) in this group. It would be good to see some
more Americans and searchers from other parts of the world
participating as well. It would be especially nice to see some of our
recently retired colleagues taking an opportunity like this to help
build upon their substantial legacies in this field.

Thanks and have a happy holiday,
Tony
