Re: [PIUG List] PIUG Space > Consideration of replacing the PIUG Discussion List with the Wiki Discussion Forum

As a long-time Notes user, I'm all too well aware that the
long-time-to-open problem is not confined to messages from any one source.
I lot of people who have sent out promo messages with similar formatting
may be disappointed to know how many got deleted without being read, just
because of this problem (please, please don't ask for specifics, or a
list, or sent me test promo messages without prior agreement).

Tom and I have had some off-list correspondence about this, and indeed RAM
may be an issue (like a lot of corporate employees, I have to take what
the IT people give me), but when it comes to constantly opening and
closing other applications (I realistically have to keep Notes open, not
to mention SameTime), it comes down to how much trouble I want to go to to
read a message.

Dear Sara and colleagues:

You wrote: "I realize this was a one-time thing, but the "formatted"
messages took significantly longer to open in Lotus Notes, so it's not
something we would want to happen on a regular basis with messages."

I think I'll take a stab at addressing your problem. At Novartis we're
also burdened with Lotus Notes. One thing I've noticed is that Notes is a
horrible memory (i.e. RAM) hog. If you're using other RAM-intensive
applications like STN Express, Reference Manager, any MS Office apps, or a
VPN application for working remotely, it's no surprise that you'd have a
tough time opening an HTML-formatted message from any sender, especially
with attachments. This really isn't a problem solely attributable to
messages sent from the Wiki.

I've upgraded my own work machine to 4GB RAM, the maximum for 32-bit
Windows computers (much more common than 64-bit). The upgrade has helped
my machine's multitasking capability tremendously. At least in terms of
cost, it's an easy upgrade because RAM cards are cheap (e.g. $50-60 for a
2-GB card from Dell ). In situations where I have to use several apps at
once, especially remotely, I simply keep Notes closed until I want to read
my email. I realize that may not be an option for you or others whose
positions are such that they really have to stay on top of their e-mail.
However, if you're working on a computer with 1GB or less of RAM and
you're having a tough time opening email messages, then you should try
closing other applications before reading PIUG postings and, in the
meantime, consider a RAM upgrade.

I want to join Tom in thanking Pat Dedert and others who have written in
support of our efforts to bring improved communication and collaboration
capabilities to PIUG. They have chosen to take a long view of the
benefits of adopting these new technologies over the short-term risks .
Also, I want to thank Tom for the huge donation of time and effort --
which he could have expended in the service of his clients -- for his
implemention and training support of the Wiki.

Happy Thanksgiving to my US colleagues.
