y to attending the conference in person or to observing the online livestre=
am. The IP-IR & IR-IP section on Wednesday, 5th November may only be avail=
able in person.

After a highly successful IRFS2007, we are proud to announce the 2 edition =
of the annual Information Retrieval Facility Symposium (IRFS2008) “Resear=
ch meets Practice”, to be held from 5th to 8th November 2008 in Vienna, A=
ustria.
The mission of the IRF is to promote, facilitate and enable Information Ret=
rieval (IR) research in close cooperation with experts from the Intellectua=
l Property (IP) community and to offer an environment for large scale exper=
imentation. Last year, more than 100 attendees contributed to building sign=
ificant bridges between the practical world of professional patent searchin=
g and the world of IR research.
Building on the IRFS2007, world leading information retrieval scientists an=
d IP information specialists from all industries will once again share thei=
r experiences and needs, and work together towards solutions.
The two main session days will take place on 6th and 7th November. A new de=
velopment for 2008 will be the Pre-Symposium Tutorials “IP for IR” and =
“IR for IP” on 5th November, and the Outreach Exhibition Day on 8 Novem=
ber.
Participation in the IRF Symposium is by invitation and recommendation only=
. We would like to encourage you to think about colleagues who might be int=
erested in this event. As places are limited, early registration is recomme=
nded at www.irfs2008.org/registration.

The IRF organises an annual symposium inviting international experts from =
both domains (IP and IR) for an exchange of ideas on specific problems and =
related solutions. This yearly event triggers a number of inter-disciplin=
ary working groups focusing on a variety of issues. The scientific results =
of these working groups and all other projects/experiments submitted during=
the year are presented on the occasion of the scientific IRF Conference.
In the future, industry will be able to rely on IR research and its instit=
utionalised knowledge transfer for realistic support in the form of practic=
al patent search applications. Attendance at the IRFS2008 is by invitation=
only. Please contact the IRFS Organising Committee at registration_at_irfs200=
8.org if you are interested in participating at the Symposium.
The IRFS2008 only accepts advance registrations; The deadline for registr=
ations is Monday, 6th October 2008. registration_at_irfs2008

After a highly successful IRFS2007, we welcome you to the 2nd edition of th=
e annual Information Retrieval FacilitySymposium (IRFS2008) “Research mee=
ts Practice”.
The mission of the IRF is to promote, facilitate and enable Information
Retrieval (IR) research in close cooperation with experts from the Intelle=
ctual Property (IP) community and to offer an environment for large scale e=
xperimentation. Last year, more than 100 attendees contributed to building=
significant bridges between the practical world of professional patent se=
arching and the world of IR research. Building on the IRFS2007, world lea=
ding information retrieval scientists and IP information specialists from =
all industries will once again share their experiences and needs, and work =
together towards solutions. The two main session days will take place on 6=
th and 7th November.
A new development for 2008 will be the Pre-Symposium Tutorials “IP for IR=
” and “IR for IP” on 5th November, and the Outreach Exhibition Day on=
8th November.
Tutorials ”IP for IR“ and ”IR for IP“
5th November 2008: 10:00 - 18:00
Pre-Symposium Tutorials ”IP for IR“ and ”IR for IP“
The “IP for IR” and “IR for IP” tutorials aim at giving Information=
Retrieval scientists and Intellectual Property professionals an overview a=
nd understanding of the IR world and the IP world: what are the main concep=
ts, fields of expertise, methods, tools, challenges and more. The “IP for=
IR” will be run by an IP professional and the “IR for IP” will be ru=
n by an IR scientist.
The morning session will be repeated in the afternoon and will be followed =
by a joint Practice Class, which all participants are invited to join. IR s=
cientists will be given a search question and will endeavour to find releva=
nt results with a given set of patent search tools. IP professionals are in=
vited to guide and coach the IR scientists through this process.
We expect this session to be highly interactive and result in an increased =
understanding of patent searching challenges. It is a great opportunity for=
IR and IP professionals to share their knowledge over their respective tec=
hniques.
Accompanying Event: 8th November, 11:00 - 20:00
”Deep Search” – The digital future of finding out
IRFS2008 delegates may also attend the following accompanying event, organi=
sed independently by the World-Information Institute.
With the explosion of information in all shades and languages, issues of or=
ientation and navigation in the oceans of knowledge pose themselves with re=
newed urgency. How is computer readable significance produced, how is meani=
ng involved in machine communication? These questions of culture, context u=
nd classification in information systems should not be ignored since what i=
s at stake is nothing less than how we, as individuals and institutions, co=
me to find out about the world. "Deep Search" addresses the social and cult=
ural dimension as well as the information politics and societal implication=
s of search.
