Scanning of PDF documents.

Susan,

There is an easy way to scan PDF documents of japanese PCT applications.

I am using Adobe Acrobat 8, which includes a scanning function in the docum=
ent menu. In Windows with corresponding character sets and language package=
s installed, this works fine.

Open the PDF document with images in Adobe Acrobat 8, scan it and copy/past=
e the text in machine translation websites.

Regards,
Dieter Küry

Dear Susan

unfortunately no. Paterra produces rather expensive OCR-based MTs, Thomson =
even more expensive ones in amendet
quality. The reason: PCTs are distributed as images only , not mixed mode t=
ext and images.

For this OCR is necessary, and with japanese letters this is difficult, for=
this the quality is rather bad.

Newer JP national applications are digitally produced (like EPs), for this =
a MT is easy.

Kind regards, Niklaus Rotzler, Clariant.

Hi all,
I could not find any websites translating JP PCTs.
The best work-round is however through patent scope: http://www.wipo.int/pc=
tdb/en/index.jsp
You can obtain a text version of the Japanese text which may be cut and pas=
ted into a translator such as Google. Not ideal granted, but at least it ca=
n give you an rough and ready translation. Best regards Sue Helliwell

The Patent and Utility Model DB site of the Japanese Patent Office provides=
fairly good machine translations, at least for Japanese A documents.

It can be found at: http://www4.ipdl.inpit.go.jp/Tokujitu/tjsogodben.ipdl?N=

PCT's like for JP documents on the PAJ website? I am aware of the fee base=
d services, but need a free resource for screening a lot of documents.
