Announcing ASIAPAT.NET
A Joint Venture of KIPI, SiriusSoft and Paterra
Seoul, Korea, 20 February 2008
The Korean Institute of Patent Information (KIPI), SiriusSoft
Corporation, and Paterra, Inc., will establish a new venture ASIAPAT.NET for
the purpose of developing databases of Asian patents. ASIAPAT.NET's
flagship database, ASIAPATFULL, will be an all-English full text machine
translated database compatible with existing vendor platforms. Derivative
and modified databases will be created to fit specialized needs.
ASIAPATFULL will be distributed to providers of value added
patent information for integration into their service portfolios.
ASIAPAT.NET will not operate a search and retrieval web service. "Patent
information users already have access to a splendid array of both
traditional and cutting edge value-added platforms. We will work with these
providers to give users optimum access to Asian patent information on the
platforms they like best," says Alan Engel, President of Paterra, Inc.
A key part of ASIAPAT.NET will be an ongoing effort to unify
and upgrade machine translation dictionaries to provide consistent retrieval
across multiple authorities. This effort will use machine translation to
not just translate into an English vocabulary, but to translate into a
controlled English vocabulary. Modern, specialist-grade thesauri will be
created, used and applied to ASIAPAT.NET's machine translation systems to
produce databases targeted to the modern patent searcher.
ASIAPAT.NET will start with Korean and Japanese patents, and
then extend coverage to other Asian patent documents as technology and
availability advance.
