[PIUG List] Understanding Patent Language

In a patent description, a method and apparatus is disclosed. In the early
part of the disclosure, it says that* a element A* is the part of the
apparatus and function as (something). Later in another paragraph it says
there *may be* addition of *a element A*, which function as (something
different).

*Is there are two element A in the apparatus with different function or only
one element A, which have two functions?*
