If you're interested in a helpful explanation of the old Japanese patent
numbering system, I would recommend taking a look at the CAS workbook for
the Basic Patent Search Techniques workshop
(http://www.cas.org/ASSETS/0B03E77763814C33A0C0183BB2B3D2ED/basicpatent.pdf).
 Go directly to page 66 of the PDF (i.e. enter "66" in the page number
field of Acrobat Reader) for an explanation of the old numbering and kind
code scheme. (The page is entitled "Numbering system that restarts each
year and uses Japanese Emperor Years.") Subsequent pages provide further
context which is useful for searching JP numbers from both old and new
systems.
