Yesterday, Sept 11, Kyoto University announced that the JPO had granted cla=
ims for a method for making iPS cells that is not limited to humans or mice=
. The grant was on a divisional application based on Yamanaka’s Dec=
2006 PCT application. The divisional was filed in May with a request for a=
ccelerated examination.
In a sidebar matter, the Japanese national government is trying to take ove=
r control of iPS intellectual property from Kyoto University. Kyoto Univers=
ity has already set up a company for managing and licensing patents that ar=
ise from iPS research. The Secretariat for Intellectual Property Strategy i=
s trying to move this to an “All-Japan” level in order to e=
xpand its coverage.
