RE: [PIUG List] E-mail spoofing - apologies

I did not receive Bullitt’s post but nonetheless I recommend greyli=
sting and requiring a match between the IP addresses belonging to the domai=
n name of the email address and the mail server.

But then our market is the corporate sector. A user whose domain name IP a=
ddresses does not match the mail servers’ IP addresses is not likel=
y to be a desirable client anyway.

BTW, AOL, Earthlink and some other ISPs are even stricter than our mail ser=
ver.

Hello, All,

Despite the many protective devices at our disposal, the sad fact remains t=
hat, if you cruise the very public internet highway, hobo's will read your =
tag number. what they do with that info is then pretty much out of your con=
trol. The only totally secure system is the one that is entirely locked dow=
n.

... such is the price of freedom and celebrity. I get junk mail all the tim=
e ... Outlook filters work for some; the rest gets filtered to trash the sa=
me as for the junk I fish from my US Postal mailbox.

wish there a better way,
rick

Alan:

One of the problems with that approach is that, for a variety of good
reasons, sometimes a user can have different email addresses with
different domain extensions that don't match the sending ISP portal.
For example, my local ISP is dejazzd.com. and while I have email
addresses that end in @dejazzd.com, I also have addresses that end in
@ptd.net and @we-buy-books.com that I append to emails that I send
through my local ISP (dejazzd.com)

I understand the need to stem spam but the tighter you restrict your
rules, the more that legitimate mail gets throttled.
