[PIUG List] PIUG-L configuration change: SEND-TO-LIST-ADDRESS is now the DEFAULT reply

Please note that by default, PIUG List replies now go to the List address
and not to the original sender's email address. This should eliminate all
out-of-office messages coming back to the original senders. The List
software is supposed to sequester out of office messages; we will see if any
slip through and take corrective action. As has been noted in previous
communications, this configuration change does leave users open to sending
private messages to the List inadvertently if not sufficiently careful to
check the "To:" line.

I made this configuration change based on feedback provided to me by list
subscribers. I was going to provide excerpts, but I do not think that
necessary. There was a mixture of preferences. These points clearly stood
out:

1. People who preferred the change to send-to-list-address were much more
passionate about this being the right answer.

2. There seemed to be a clear consensus that the previous default
send-to-sender was seriously stifling participation in the PIUG list due to
the return of many out-of-office messages.

3. "I would prefer to have the reply-to be the list address, not the sender.
This is how 99% (non-scientific) of all the other lists that I'm subscribed
to function."

I can not recall why the List moderators originally chose the send-to-sender
default. Personally, I was very much in agreement with this communication
sent to me: "I delete a lot of emails daily - I'm sure many of us do - so I
don't mind the extra ones generated by a posting to the PIUG List and the
"out of office" emails tend to arrive very fast so you can do a bulk delete
within the first hour after sending the message." But clearly many PIUG
subscribers completely disagree. I am sorry that we didn't make this change
sooner. If this was really a factor keeping people from sharing with the
list, I hope that we will now see participation pick up significantly. If
the change doesn't work out, we can always go back to the previous default.

Thanks to all who responded. Please do not hesitate to bring up other issues
regarding list operation along with your substantive messages. Every message
provides at the bottom the email address for your List administrators, A.J.
