Thanks to Cynthia and others who helped me cure a case of cluelessness.

 

Having put my profile up, I can’t help wondering about the cultural=
 implications. In Japanese society, putting two contacts in contact with e=
ach other is never done lightly. The go-between has some level of responsi=
bility for the subsequent relationship. The two persons being connected ha=
ve responsibility first to the go-between, then to each other.

 

It took me years to learn this and was a source of problems in my consultin=
g years. It put me in the position of having to vet my paying clients befo=
re entering into a liaison role with Japanese businesses.

 

If two persons are members of the same group, they can use that as a basis =
for a cold call, but this is a far cry from a personal introduction.

 

LinkedIn’s concept works well in American culture in which the go-b=
etween is not held responsible for the subsequent relationship.

 

It will be interesting to see how Japanese, Korean and Chinese members appr=
oach it.

 

LinkedIn is clearly a great lookup tool. But I am wary about features, suc=
h as recommendations, that seek to make it more than a lookup tool.

Hi, Alan.

The PIUG Board approved this action to provide another avenue for PIUG memb=
ers to connect with each other. One must be an active PIUG member to join t=
his LinkedIn group. The group designation legitimizes the claim that a pers=
on is a member of PIUG and it displays the logo as part of that person's pr=
ofile. We hope to find out from this experience whether or not this LinkedI=
n tool will be useful to foster interaction among PIUG members or perhaps b=
ring PIUG expertise to the broader community.
