[PIUG List] RE: [CHMINF-L] Why apologize for duplicates?

Dear Bob,

I no longer view the apology for duplicates as being polite. It implies a =
stereotyping of the membership which I am starting to find condescending, i=
f not mildly insulting. I appreciate duplicate postings. If I am seeing a=
message on two or more of my lists, it suggests that the content is more r=
elevant to my needs/interests and should not be overlooked. (My AARP-eligi=
ble brain benefits from the reinforcement.) They also help break down the =
walls between groups.

Also, at least PIUG is not suffering from too many messages. If anything, =
the messages on it are mostly industry announcements. This raises the ques=
tion of whether or not the membership is going elsewhere for answers to the=
ir questions. The number of question-answer threads seems unhealthily low.=

Of course, getting hit with 50+ out-of-the-office messages with each post i=
s a powerful disincentive to posting. The nocall (Northern California Law =
Libraries) list has somehow managed to avoid or solve this problem. Nocall=
is a very healthy list in which requests for help usually get multiple res=
ponses within minutes.

Alan:

My message may have been misinterpreted. The mailing lists I was referring=

to were those of the two lab equipment makers who evidently got my e-mail=

address off an ACS list. If so, many others may (all of CINF?) may have
received the same messages but may have discarded them as irrelevant (after=

all, I last worked in a lab 38 years ago).

Otherwise, I think it's only polite to apologize for duplication of message=
s
since all of us get too many of them. Probably the largest overlaps are
between CHMINF-L and PIUG or the SLA list.

Why do posters apologize for duplicates? The apology assumes that everyone=

subscribes to the same lists. The same post showing up on more that one of=

my mailing lists is a form of relevancy ranking. I had better take a look=

at it.
