Congratulations- I'm sure you found it!

After the fact, I see that this could have been located quite simply with G=
oogle.

I tried: patent "rubber tyre" france

The story is #4 on the hit list. Would have been straightforward to find th=
e patent from there.

  Hello,

I hope I found the solution:

  That’s very interesting story…=
Please let me cite some more details instead of explanation (source: http:=
//www.mearns.org.uk/stonehaven/thomson.htm)

Robert William Thomson was only 23 years old when he patented the pneumat=
ic tyre. He was granted a patent in France in 1846 and in the USA in 1847. =
His tyre consisted of a hollow belt of India-rubber inflated with air so th=
at the wheels presented "a cushion of a to the ground, rail or track on whi=
ch they run". This elastic belt of rubberised canvas was enclosed within a =
strong outer casing of leather which was bolted to the wheel. Thomson's "Ae=
rial Wheels" were demonstrated in London's Regent Park in March 1847 and we=
re fitted to several horse-drawn carriages, greatly improving the comfort o=
f travel and reducing noise. One set ran for 1200 miles without sign of det=
erioration. However, despite satisfactory testing the tyre developed furthe=
r at this time because the North British Rubber Company was unable to suppl=
y the strong thin rubber necessary for the inner tubes. For many years Thom=
son was frustrated by this lack of thin rubber and he turned to the develop=
ment of his solid rubber tyres. It was not until 43 years later that the pn=
eumatic tyre returned when it was developed as a bicycle tyre by John Boyd =
Dunlop. Dunlop was granted a patent in 1888 but two years later was officia=
lly informed that it was invalid as Thomson’s patent=
 preceded it.

If I am right the the correct answer is:

  John Boyd Dunlop

  4116 (UK) issued March 8, 1889
  435995 (US) issued September 9, 1890

Patent of Dunlop was invalidated by earlier patent of Robert William Thom=
son

  Â “Improvements in carriage-wheelsâ=

  US patent 5104, issued 1847

  British patent 10990, Â Â issued 10 Jun 1846

  FR patent ???

I give up with exact  French number… Only date =
1846 appears everywhere..

I suppose it can be mentioned in article http://www.jstor.org/pss/2596830=
but unfortunately I don’t have access to all JSTOR =
resources.

  Best regards,

  Agnieszka Gorak-Marecik

  Kris,

This is unfortunately not the patent referred as "ours" in the text.

  Some hints:

  - Using the right strategy you will have no doubt about the result.

  - Finding the relevant record requires more inspiration than online persp=
iration.

       CH36680

        Inventor:
