Agnieszka,

I am sorry to disappoint you, but this is not the right answer, even if yo=
ur findings reveals another interesting "reinventing the wheel" story. =

Hello,

I hope I found the solution:
That’s very interesting story… Please let
me cite some more details instead of explanation (source: http://www.mearns=
.org.uk/stonehaven/thomson.htm)

Robert William Thomson was only 23 years
old when he patented the pneumatic tyre. He was granted a patent in France =
in 1846 and in the USA in 1847.
His tyre consisted of a hollow belt of India-rubber inflated with air so th=
at
the wheels presented "a cushion of a to the ground, rail or track on which
they run". This elastic belt of rubberised canvas was enclosed within a
strong outer casing of leather which was bolted to the wheel. Thomson's
"Aerial Wheels" were demonstrated in London 's Regent Park in March 1847 an=
d were fitted to
several horse-drawn carriages, greatly improving the comfort of travel and
reducing noise. One set ran for 1200 miles without sign of deterioration.
However, despite satisfactory testing the tyre developed further at this ti=
me
because the North British Rubber Company was unable to supply the strong th=
in
rubber necessary for the inner tubes. For many years Thomson was frustrated=
 by
this lack of thin rubber and he turned to the development of his solid rubb=
er
tyres. It was not until 43 years later that the pneumatic tyre returned whe=
n it
was developed as a bicycle tyre by John Boyd Dunlop. Dunlop was granted a
patent in 1888 but two years later was officially informed that it was inva=
lid
as Thomson’s patent preceded it.

If I am right the the correct answer is:

John Boyd Dunlop
4116 ( UK ) issued
March 8, 1889
435995 (US) issued September 9, 1890

Patent of Dunlop was invalidated by
earlier patent of Robert William Thomson
 “Improvements in carriage-wheels”
USpatent 5104, issued 1847
British patent 10990, issued
10 Jun 1846
FR patent ???
I give up with exact French number… Only
date 1846 appears everywhere..
I suppose it can be mentioned in article http://www.jstor.org/pss/2596830 b=
ut
unfortunately I don’t have access to all JSTOR resources.

Best regards,

Agnieszka Gorak-Marecik

Kris,

This is unfortunately not the patent referred as "ours" in the
text.

Some hints:

- Using the right strategy you will have no doubt about the result.
- Finding the relevant record requires more inspiration than
online perspiration.

Is it:

Roue élastique
Publication number: CH36680
Publication date: 1907-02-15
Inventor: AUGUSTE EUGENE BRILLIE (FR)
Applicant: BRILLIE AUGUSTE EUGENE

Although written in French, it's a Swiss patent (disclsoure leaves much
to be desired...).
