Thanks to everyone who has responded. I took a close look at the front
page of JP 2935750 that Elliott Linder was kind enough to send me with his=
 
response and there is a Japanese character immediately adjacent to the
number. A colleague tells me that the character translates to "number" in=
 
English. There is also a character at the beginning of the number where
the two digit country code precedes the number. This character translates=
 
to the English "The". As best I understand it, the Japanese patent number=
 
on the face of the Japanese document reads The 2935750 Number. I'm
wondering if the various vendors are substituting the first character
"The" with the country code "JP" and the second character at the end of
the numeric string is being machine translated as the English letter "B"?=
 
At any rate, you do retrieve the right document when you search on the
number without the B suffix.

Dear Bruce,
Looks like you may have a simple typo there. The normal format for either=
 
a B1 or B2 would be a 7 digit number, which started at 2500001 when the JP=
 
law changed in 1995. You have the correct number of digits in your
reference, so maybe someone is using an 8-digit field for publication
number and just tacked the first 'B' on the end at data input time.
According to the JPO concordance, JP 2935750-B corresponds to JP
06-508279-A which is clearly a PCT transfer case. It's based on WO
92/22264-A listing Allergan as applicant.
