In an effort to support small business, the Japan Patent Office (a patent
office that is not at war with its constituency) announced that it is
lowering patent-related fees 12% and trademark-related fees 43%. The
biggest cuts are for long term maintenance fees.
Patent application- 15,000 yen from 16,000 yen
Maintenance fees
Years 1-3: 2,300 yen per patent + 200 yen/invention from 2,600 + 200
Years 4-6: 7,100 + 500 from 8,100 + 600
Years 7-9: 21,400 + 1,700 from 24,300 + 1,900
Years 10+: 61,600 + 4,800 from 81,200 + 6,400
Trademarks:
Application: 3,400 yen per application + 8,600 yen per class from 6,000 +
15,000/class
Registration: 37,600/class from 66,000/class
Renewal: 48,500/class from 151,000/class
Subject to Diet approval, the new fee structure is expected to be
implemented in June 2008.
