Non-Patent Literature (NPL) File Now Available

The NPL file is the internal EPO examiner file containing non-patent literature (bibliographic) cited references found in the Search Reports of EP published applications. These are the XP citations found in PlusPat, not only EP, but also PCT and FR Search Reports (the Citation or CT field).

NPL on Questel•Orbit includes:

  • EPO examiner non-patent literature cited references
  • References from both the EPO internal collection as well as external sources, including: INSPEC, Compendex, FSTA, BIOSIS, BEILSTEIN, MEDLINE, IBM TDB, IEE, IEEE, to mention a few.
  • Over 2 million records, with over 30% ECLA coded for searching and retrieval
  • Over 180,000 NPL cited references in PlusPat
  • Title, Source, Authors, ISSN & ISBN

You can search NPL using ECLA codes and key words, or by crossfile searching the NPL cited references found in PlusPat. After finding the NPL references, you can search the appropriate sci-tech files on Questel-Orbit in order to retrieve abstracts and other producer value-added information.

QPAT: Power-packed with Better Patent Delivery and Patent Citation Analysis/Visualization

The latest QPAT incarnation has new installations you’ve been waiting for: (1) additional coverage to enhance the patent delivery service; (2) a shopping basket that lets users track and directly download patent document copies; (3) simpler navigation; and (4) an exciting, new patent citation analysis and visualization capability made possible by our partnership with anacubis™.

The patent delivery’s greater coverage means more access to the information you need:

  • PCT documents available the day after publication
  • Expanded country coverage—Canada, Australia, and more. See the help menu for a complete listing of country coverage.
  • Publication stages: European B patents, WO A3 search reports, and more
  • Better availability tagging: PDF icons that show if patent copies are deliverable.

The enhanced shopping basket offers unique features that let you:

  • Manage incoming patent source documents effectively.
  • Directly download and display the document from the shopping basket.
  • Easily track delivery status with information such as document availability, file size and number of pages.

Navigation is even more convenient. Users go directly from their search to the Hit List display, where they can choose from several record display options.

The anacubis™ citation analysis and visualization feature, included in all QPAT subscriptions, lets you explore the ties among cited and citing patents, and automatically links related assignees, inventors and technology classifications (ECLA and USPCL). These links will automatically open the anacubis™ Viewer with the requested patent. With the resulting information, you can:

  • Identify and monitor competitors
  • Find corporate level citing relationships
  • Locate classification codes for further searching
  • Identify prior art for validity searching
  • Identify the significant inventors in a technology area
  • Combine patent data with other corporate information retrieved from other ancubis™ supported data-providers

How does the anacubis™ Viewer work? In real-time, it automatically creates in real-time a visual representation of data that users can manipulate. It uses icons to symbolize data, such as people and organizations, and displays a diagram of the data relationships. Each data and relationship holds the source information, so users can see the ‘big picture’ in one View. Users can then drag the Views into anacubis™ desktop tools and combine them with other business information for further analysis. The anacubis desktop software will be available near the end of September. To find out more, click here.
