RE: Search Problem in WPI / Statistical analysis on STN

On reading Edlyn Simmons' communication about features
for statistical analysis on various hosts, it became
apparent that some of STN's capabilities are not well
understood. Hence I would like to draw your attention
to the following points.

On STN, patent assignee names are selected (mapped) as
bound phrase. In the WPINDEX/WPIDS files and all other
patent databases bound phrases are stored in the
PA field, except for INPADOC where you find them in the
PAS (INPADOC standard) field.

Using the SELECT command or even more conveniently
SmartSELECT you will obtain a ranking according to
the number of occurences. With SmartSELECT you will have
the choice of ranking according to the number of hit
documents. This eliminates the problem of multiple entries
per document in case of the Patent Assignee Codes (PACO)
in WPINDEX/WPIDS.
To combine differing company names, SmartSELECT offers the
EDIT COMBINE option to merge items in the ranked set and
automatically re-ranks them.

Thus we are confident that STN provides all capabilities
required for a statistical analysis of patentee names.

If you are interested to learn more about these features,
please contact STN's marketing staff.
