Our 2025 research shows that AI adoption in the profession is steadily increasing, particularly for routine and time-consuming tasks, including:

These trends highlight a strong and growing role for AI in the Intellectual Property sector, with significant potential for continued expansion.  

Despite this momentum, AI adoption remains gradual. Many IP professionals are still in the process of understanding how AI will reshape day-to-day practice. 

While there is clear enthusiasm and recognition of its benefits, the inherently risk-averse nature of the profession tempers rapid transformation. At the same time, professionals increasingly recognize the need to embrace AI tools more fully to avoid falling behind competitors already leveraging these technologies. 

 As a result, the industry is moving toward a future where AI becomes an essential component of IP workflows, balancing innovation, efficiency, and professional caution.

Our research shows that AI adoption among IP professionals depends heavily on the type of task being addressed. 

For well-established applications such as machine translation, patent search, and data analytics, professionals are generally more willing to embrace AI, as these tools are already widely trusted and familiar. 

In contrast, for more complex, judgment-intensive tasks such as document drafting, infringement research, and claim charting, AI is still in the process of building trust, as these activities have traditionally required the expert judgment of IP attorneys. 

 Ultimately, the future of AI in IP practice will depend not only on technological advancement, but also on the ability to consistently deliver trustworthy, secure, and high-quality outcomes.
